As cancer lawsuits against Roundup weed killer continue to make headlines, Bayer – which became Roundup’s owner when it bought Monsanto a year ago – has announced plans to invest more than $5.6 billion over the next decade to develop new methods to combat weeds.
Bayer’s announcement comes as the company attempts to deal with competing deadlines for appeal in three major Roundup trials. Rulings in each of those cases have gone against Bayer, including a California jury which recently awarded a couple $2 billion after concluding that exposure to Roundup led to their cancer diagnoses.
Before selling to Germany-based Bayer, Monsanto was headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, where it’s facing another round of new trials. Sharlean Gordon, a woman in her 50s, charges Roundup caused her cancer and is set to go to court this month. The presiding judge recently denied Monsanto’s motion for summary judgement before trial, and rejected the company’s request to exclude the opinions of several experts. The case, originally filed in July 2017 on behalf of more than 75 plaintiffs, is the first of that group to go to trial.
ROUNDUP CASES TAKING TOLL ON COMPANY
To date, more than 13,400 plaintiffs – including many clients of The Law Firm of Pintas & Mullins – have filed suit against Bayer in the U.S. In all of these cases, the plaintiffs have contracted non-Hodgkin lymphoma or some other form of cancer due to exposure to Roundup or another weed killer containing glyphosate.
Glyphosate, which has been designated as cancer-causing by both the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer and California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, has been sprayed more than any other agricultural chemical in history.
All of this has led companies like Costco to stop selling Roundup, while pressure is mounting on stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s to no longer stock the controversial weed killer.
Environmentalists, meanwhile, have become increasingly active. In addition to their claims against Roundup, environmental groups are expressing concern about trace amounts of the same cancer-causing chemical – glyphosate – being found in snack products and cereal, such as Cheerios.
HOLD BAYER ACCOUNTABLE
With Bayer’s stock prices dropping 44 percent since August 2018, and Bayer investors becoming increasingly restless, many believe the company will attempt to reach a global settlement on the Roundup lawsuits. Experts estimate that settlement could be as high as $10 billion.
