The World Health Organization recently labeled Roundup weedkiller a probable human carcinogen. Monsanto’s popular product is linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in farm workers and other agricultural professionals. Our cancer lawyers are now accepting clients who wish to take action against Monsanto.
Dozens of lawsuits filed against the company accuse it of knowing that Roundup could cause cancer and convincing governments, farmers, and the public that it was safe. The main ingredient in Roundup – glyphosate – is an herbicide used to kill weeds on all types of crops, from potatoes, to corn, to lentils and soybeans.
In fact, glyphosate was recently named the most-heavily used agricultural chemical of all time.
It is so widely used that it’s contaminating drinking water, ground soil, women’s breast milk, blood and urine. An analysis found that women in the U.S. had glyphosate levels that were eight times higher than levels in European women. The European Union has refused to approve Roundup’s use, hopefully leading to its total ban.
The Dutch government recently voted to ban Roundup and all other glyphosate-based herbicides. France and Brazil are poised to ban it as well.
We do not know how much glyphosate is in our food and water because the USDA does not test for it. What we do know is that Roundup is used most heavily in non-organic foods. One analysis found glyphosate in more than 75% of air and rain samples collecting during Mississippi Delta Region’s 2007 growing season.
In more northern states, glyphosate is sprayed on some crops – like wheat and barley – right before harvest. Monsanto engaged in incredible marketing programs to convince farmers that Roundup was safe. Monsanto sales reps would even drink Roundup in product demonstrations to convince farmers it was not toxic.
Although this is a clever tactic, Roundup actually sets off cellular changes in the body that take many years to manifest as cancer. So yes, a sales rep could drink Roundup and seem just fine right afterward. The damage would simply show up years later as cancer, nerve damage, kidney disease, infertility, and other devastating illnesses.
Decades of Data Prove Link to Cancer
Based on years of evidence, the International Agency for Research on Cancer determined that Roundup can cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and lung cancer in humans.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system. Tumors develop from white blood cells that are supposed to fight disease throughout the body. Symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma include abdominal pain / swelling, chest pain, coughing or trouble breathing, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin.
Certain people are more at risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, including, now, farm and agricultural workers. It is most common in people aged 60 or older.
700 Lawsuits Pending
Monsanto has been at the forefront of toxic pesticide and herbicide exposure since the 1970s. Monsanto’s DDT was a mainstay in American farming until 1972, when evidence proved it was toxic and it was banned. More than 700 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuits are currently pending against company.
Monstanto also pioneered development and supply of Agent Orange, which devastated American soldiers and the foreign public in the Vietnam War, causing cancer, nerve damage, and respiratory disorders.
Monsanto has known Roundup was carcinogenic since it started selling it in 1974. It lobbied the EPA and countless other agencies to downplay its toxicity. Monsanto labs responsible for studying Roundup have repeatedly been found guilty of fraud. All the while, Monsanto has been telling governments, farmers and the public that Roundup is “non-toxic.”
