Several media outlets are reporting that Bayer – the parent company of Monsanto – is offering an $8 billion deal to settle more than 18,000 lawsuits. The lawsuits claim that exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer and its active ingredient, glyphosate, is responsible for causing the plaintiffs’ non-Hodgkin lymphoma or other forms of cancer.
Glyphosate, which has been sprayed more than any other agricultural chemical in history, has been designated as cancer-causing by both the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer and California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. This has led companies like Costco to stop selling Roundup, while pressure is mounting on stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s to no longer stock the controversial weed killer.
Kenneth Feinberg, a mediator in the Roundup lawsuits, labelled media reports of a possible settlement as “pure fiction.” But despite Feinberg’s comments, negotiations apparently have advanced to the point that Bayer and plaintiffs’ attorneys have asked two judges in St. Louis to push back Roundup lawsuits that were to set to begin in the next few weeks.
Moreover, Bayer’s CEO, Werner Baumann, said at the end of July that he would consider a “financially reasonable” settlement.
Now Is the Time to Act
One thing is certain. Bayer’s lawyers and the attorneys for a number of Roundup cases are continuing to meet in New York City. Those talks are aimed at hammering out an agreement that would resolve all current Roundup cases, as well as any future cancer claims filed against Roundup and Monsanto.
