Raw and roasted peanuts manufactured by Sunland Inc. are now being added to a massive nationwide recall of peanut and other possibly contaminated nut products.
The FDA warns that the ongoing peanut recall includes shelled and in-shell roasted and raw peanuts that have no expiration date or are within their current shelf life. These products may be linked to dangerous Salmonella Bredeney infections.
The recalled products were chiefly distributed under their own label to major supermarket, retail and grocery chains. The products should either be returned for a refund or disposed of immediately.
The raw peanuts (both in-shell and shelled) that fall under the present recall were distributed from October 11, 2011 to October 12, 2012, and the roasted peanuts were distributed from April 12, 2012 to October 12, 2012. According to FDA records, inspections carried out as far back as 2009 revealed reprehensible conditions at the Sunland Inc. plant. However, the findings were not objectionable to the extent required for the agency to take action. Now FDA tests found salmonella in raw peanuts from the manufacturing facility.
The Washington State Department of Agriculture laboratory also confirmed the outbreak strain called Salmonella Bredeney in a jar of Trader Joe’s peanut butter obtained from the home of an infected patient.
In response to Sunland Inc.’s latest peanut and nut butter recall expansion, nearly 50 other products were removed from the market. MondelÄ“z Global LLC recently recalled its Green & Black’s Organic Peanut & Sea Salt Milk Chocolate Bar, which contained peanuts from the Sunland Inc. facility.

Hines Nut Company in Dallas, TX also voluntarily withdrew all of its Salted Jumbo Virginia In-Shell Peanuts. The recall specifically includes Salted Jumbo Virginia In-Shell Peanuts processed at its Portales, New Mexico Peanut Processing Plant.
The salmonella-related recall involves practically all kinds of food products. As the LA Times is reporting, the recall now includes cookies, crackers, tahini, gelato and more. It also covers food items containing other nuts and seeds such as almonds, cashews and sesame seeds, along with different flavored spreads and butters. Brownies, snack mixes, peanut sesame noodles, and chicken spring rolls are also involved.
Salmonella may be present in peanut butter and related products in a variety of ways. The peanuts may have been in contact with contaminated water at some point during their growth at an unhygienic facility or in unclean processing machines.
