Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is in the news again for all of the wrong reasons.
The pharmaceutical giant has been told by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to hand over documents linked to claims that the company’s talcum powder products have been contaminated with asbestos.
The SEC, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and U.S. Senator Patty Murray requested that J&J
provide
all communications with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the safety of its baby powder, as well as all advertising materials that assure the public their products are safe, from 1966 until the present.
Action is Latest in Ongoing Fight Against Johnson & Johnson
The SEC action is the latest in the fight against J&J. In addition to nearly 12,000 lawsuits filed by women who are suffering from ovarian cancer caused by the company’s powder products, J&J is now facing:
- A federal multidistrict lawsuit which claims J&J’s body powders cause cancer;
- A product liability suit related to asbestos contamination in J&J products;
- A New Jersey securities suit that says J&J harmed stockholders by concealing that its talc products contained asbestos and that exposure could cause mesothelioma and ovarian cancer;
- Another New Jersey lawsuit that says J&J board members violated their duties by failing to put warnings on powder products and continuing to market them as safe;
- Two class-action suits which claim J&J cost its workers millions of dollars by allowing them to invest their retirement savings in company stock while hiding the fact that its powder products contain asbestos.
Company Refused to Act Despite Warnings
For more than a century, J&J has dominated the talc powder market, with its products accounting for more than $420 million in sales in 2017.
Throughout that time, the company has insisted there is no science to

between its talc products and ovarian cancer. As early as May 1974, J&J’s own director of research and development warned that materials found in the company’s talc ores represented a severe health hazard. While repeated studies confirmed those initial concerns, the company never disclosed the issue to regulators.
Looking back over nearly 50 years, it appears that while J&J knew their powders tested positive for asbestos, the company simply chose to ignore the science and hide the data from the general public.
