Glyphosate refers to an herbicide and toxic chemical that kills weeds without killing your grass. It is the active ingredient in the weed killer chemical spray Roundup. If your cat suffers exposure to glyphosate through Roundup or other means, it can produce illness in your feline friend.
If your cat comes into contact with Roundup, either by licking up the chemical from a fresh spray, or getting Roundup on its fur and licking it later on, your cat could potentially develop illnesses that could lead to cancer. The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) lists some symptoms of exposure to Roundup for cats and other animals can include loss of appetite, stomach issues, or drowsiness.
Roundup serves to kill weeds like crabgrass, dandelions, clover, and others in your lawn, while leaving your grass unharmed and looking healthy; however, glyphosate, the toxic chemical inside Roundup, classifies as a probable carcinogen according to the World Health Organization (WHO). That has led to people worrying about using Roundup because of its potentially harmful effects on themselves or their pets.
Toxicity in Roundup
Since 2010, consumers have been skittish about using Roundup after Roundup was found by the WHO and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to likely contain carcinogens. Its manufacturer Monsanto (owned by German conglomerate Bayer AG since June 2018) insists the product is safe with safe recommended use.
Exposure to the ingredient glyphosate by humans, pets, and even farm animals can cause long-term illnesses that could later produce cancer in some. Lymphoma is a type of cancer found in cats as well, mostly in mid-aged and older cats.
Dogs can suffer more exposure to glyphosate than cats. Our dogs are outdoors more often, closer to pesticides that we use on our yards and gardens. Dogs can risk exposure to glyphosate by chasing toys in the weeds and wrestling around in grassy areas that people sprayed with Roundup.
If a dog’s favorite ball sat in a grassy area, and the dog later chewed on it, glyphosate may be inside the dog’s body. The same goes for outdoor cats who may be rubbing their fur against leaves, branches, or other garden greenery that someone sprayed with Roundup.
Lawsuits Involving Roundup
Because of this unseen attribute of Roundup, many individual and class-action lawsuits have been brought against Bayer and Monsanto over the past two years. In fact, filings records show that over 52,000 persons have claimed they got cancer from using Roundup. Mutation Research/ Reviews in Mutation Research showed a link between the development of lymphoma cancer-like genetic alterations from glyphosate-based pesticides and herbicides and a person being exposed to glyphosate.
If you were exposed to Roundup and later diagnosed with cancer, and can prove that your exposure to Roundup was the key reason, then you may be able to pursue compensation through a lawsuit against the manufacturers.
How To File a Roundup Lawsuit
Filing a claim against a global manufacturer for negligence is a serious decision that requires due diligence, research, and patience. Patience may be the most important trait because after all, there are others also filing claims.
Some consumers of the product have worked with law firms to be part of these lawsuits, and they allege that the manufacturer (Monsanto/Bayer) was negligent in warning consumers about the inherent dangers in using the product.
How a Lawyer Can Help You with Your Roundup Case
One of the most important areas to think about in a potential settlement claim is the future of your family and other loved ones. If you got cancer from Roundup, you can seek out a law firm to help you pursue compensation. A law firm can represent you in the claim and support your pursuit of recovery for any medical expenses you have incurred, lost income from inability to work, and any other financial issues sustained because of the cancer.
For years, Monsanto has advocated that Roundup was safe to use for home use around people and pets. If they knew it was not, their actions would constitute negligence.
Participating in an individual lawsuit or a class-action lawsuit against the company may help you address your individual case. You have the option to speak to a law firm that handles large cases involving product negligence.
