The latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety status report states that the Toyota Yaris is associated with the highest rate of personal injury protection claims.
The report reveals that the small and subcompact car’s claim rate was 28.5 for every 1000 Yaris cars the industry insured. That means that if you’re riding in a Toyota Yaris, the chances of you getting injured in a crash are higher than those associated with another vehicle.
The Suzuki SX4 came a close second with a claim rate of 26.6 per 1000 insured vehicles. Other vehicles listed as having a high claim rate by the institute’s measurement were the Chevrolet Aveo, Kia Rio, Mitsubishi Galant, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa, Dodge Avenger and the Nissan Sentra.
The Porsche 911 was cited to have the smallest number of personal injury claims (4.5 claims for every 1000 vehicles). The Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Corvette, Mercedes-Benz SL-Class convertible, Chevrolet Silverado, Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus LX570, Cadillac Escalade and Ford F-150 are other vehicles which scored favorably with respect to the number of personal injury claims.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) said its study showed that vehicles with the most number of injury claims were usually small cars. The Institute’s vice-president said that if everything else is equal, a heavier and bigger vehicle provides better protection for its occupants than a lighter and smaller one.
The institute also researched vehicles that experienced maximum damage in dollars in a crash. The Ferrari California worth $200,000 had the worst rank with a $82,112 average claim. The Maserati Granturismo came second averaging $16,150 for a claim.
Among the less pricey cars (below $30,000), the Mitsubishi Lancer was found to have both a high claim frequency as well as a high dollar amount for damage caused per car crash. The Lancer’s per-claim average was $6,221.
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the Suberu Impreza WRX and the Suzuki Kizashi were other vehicles with high claims and losses.
In other crash-related news, myfoxhouston.com recently reported that a possible road-rage shooting caused a double rollover crash. According to police, a man driving a pickup truck assumed that an SUV cut him off and fired several shots at the SUV, injuring a 5 year-old and two men inside. Both vehicles lost control off and rolled over on the highway, killing the driver of the pickup truck. The occupants of the SUV were seriously injured.

In another fatal car crash in South Carolina, a 15-year-old boy died in a one-car crash on his way home after visiting his father’s gravesite. The coroner said that the teen was speeding in his Mercedes convertible when he lost control of the car. Also, according to a local news affiliate, the teen drove off the right side of the road, collided with a drain pipe, and flipped the car over.

The 15-year-old died on impact. There were no passengers in the car. The coroner said that such accidents could be averted if teenagers are better educated about correct behavior while driving.
