Diagnosed with hearing loss in high school, Mandy Cooper decided to pursue a career as a nurse to help others with similar conditions. In the essay that won her the $2,500 Pintas & Mullins Future Nurses Scholarship, Cooper described how her own experiences with hearing loss impacted this decision.
“As a nurse who knows sign language, I will be able to open lines of communication with patients who have hearing difficulty,” she wrote. Plus, her studies at the University of Pittsburgh have involved complex research into the ways that hearing loss and other conditions can affect a person’s access to quality healthcare services.
Mandy Cooper’s Important Research
Cooper has worked with a professor at Pitt on research projects concerning “health disparities
associated [with] socioeconomic status, patient preferences, and access to care among patients with hearing loss.”
This research has not gone unrewarded. In addition to providing Cooper with crucial information to hone her nursing skills and proper healthcare administration, her projects have been recognized officially by the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research.
What’s Next for Mandy Cooper?
In her post-college life, Cooper plans to become a travel nurse for a short time in order to become more familiar with healthcare disparities, solutions to those issues, and different approaches to medicine.
“I would really like to travel the world and see how healthcare services are administered in other countries,” she said in her interview with us. To this end, Cooper is also pursuing a certificate in Global Health during her time at the University of Pittsburgh. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, she wrote there is a “need for a cooperative approach to healthcare.”
Cooper also plans to continue her research into the many ways that people can lack healthcare access (and ways to alleviate this problem). We wish her the best of luck in her endeavors and are proud to provide the $2,500 Future Nurses Scholarship to help her achieve her goals.

The Future Nurses Scholarship
Pintas & Mullins established the Future Nurses Scholarship because we have seen the impact nurses have on injured people. In our line of work, we serve clients who have been devastated by the negligence of others, and our clients frequently tell us about the outstanding level of care and attention they have received from nursing staff.
As Mandy Cooper wrote in her winning essay, Gallup polls have consistently ranked nursing as the top career for honesty and ethics over the past 19 years and counting. We seek to honor those, like Ms. Cooper, who dedicate their lives to serving others during their most vulnerable moments.
To that end, we’ll let Mandy Cooper have the last word. “Each of us has a personal, moral responsibility to make the world a better place.”
