The controversial Sterigenics facility in Willowbrook has been shut down. The shutdown comes after the release of new air quality numbers and renewed calls for the plant’s to be closed from government officials and area residents – many of whom are suffering from cancer.
The Illinois EPA (IEPA) recently conducted new tests on air quality in the area. Those tests showed the highest levels of ethylene oxide (EtO) recorded in the area. EtO is the cancer-causing, odorless gas produced by Sterigenics in making other chemicals such as sterilizers for medical equipment.
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed by our clients and many others who have been diagnosed with cancer caused by the plant’s toxic emissions.
IEPA’s Action Will Stop Toxic Emissions
IEPA’s Seal Order on the plant will prevent Sterigenics from using EtO. This change will stop the toxic emissions which have endangered the health of those living in or around Willowbrook.
Sterigenics calls the IEPA’s decision “indefensible” and pledges to fight the plant closure.
