Auto accident attorneys at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm report of a five-vehicle crash that took place the morning of Tuesday, May 7, 2013 in Portage Park, Illinois. The crash injured at least five people, including two children.
The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. in the 5100 block of West Addison Street. Police reported that five vehicles were involved, although no further details were available. One injured child was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and the other child, also in serious-to-critical condition, to Lurie Children’s Hospital. The boy at Lutheran General had extensive head lacerations, and the girl at Lurie suffered lacerations to her face.
At least one other person was listed in serious-to-critical condition and was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with injuries to the knee and chest. The other two injured were taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center in serious-to-fair condition.
In related news, a man who caused a February 27, 2013 crash was recently charged for killing an 11-year-old boy. The man, from Sycamore, IL, was driving an SUV west on Highway 64 in Kane County when he failed to stop for a backup of cars that were stopped due to another accident. The man drove his SUV into a Chevrolet Cavalier where the little boy was sitting in the backseat. The front passenger was also severely injured in the crash, as were several other motorists in the stopped line of cars.
The Sycamore man was given a urine sample after the crash which came up positive for heroin metabolites. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Monday, May 6, and he was taken into custody. He appeared this morning in bond court where a judge set his bail at $250,000.
The man is being charged with three counts of aggravated DUI, driving without insurance, and failing to yield to avoid an accident. The deceased 11-year-old was Matthew Ranken of Sycamore.
Another offender, a 73-year-old Northbrook motorist, was recently caught and charged with a hit and run in Highland Park. Authorities were able to match car parts left near the crosswalk where the pedestrian was hit to a Volvo being repaired at a Northbrook auto repair shop.

The Volvo driver struck the pedestrian around 9 p.m. while crossing Sheridan Road and Elm Place. The woman did not stop to help the pedestrian, a Chicago resident visiting relatives in Highland Park. The victim is still in the hospital, and the road to recovery will be arduous. She was on a designated crosswalk at the time of the crash.
The motorist was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, which is a Class Two felony and punishable by three to seven years in prison, along with failure to yield to a pedestrian, which is a Class Four felony punishable by one to three years in prison. The driver is currently out on $40,000 bond, and there is at least one eyewitness to the incident. Neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the crash, although it remains a terrible tragedy to the victim and her family.
