77% of all car accidents are because of a driver’s error. Do your part to make the road safer for you and for everyone around you so that you don’t become part of the statistic. Here are eight easy things you can do:
- Wear your seat belt. Wearing a seat belt cuts the risk of serious injury by 50%. In the event of an accident, your seat belt could prevent you from getting thrown into your windshield or out of your vehicle.
- Ensure your car is functioning properly. Know when to get routine maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, done.
- Get rid of distractions. Give your full attention to the road and your fellow drivers. Don’t try to multitask by using your phone, or changing radio stations or temperature settings.
- Control your speed. Driving faster than the posted speed limit is dangerous not only to you, but to everyone else on the road. Be mindful of your speed.
- Use your turning signal when changing lanes, and never guess that a lane is okay to get on if you don’t have a full view of the cars on that lane. It’s best to wait if you’re not sure.
- Keep a safe distance between you and the driver in front of you.Following another driver too closely could end in a collision. If the car in front of you suddenly stops, you are responsible for being able to stop, too, which can be hard to do if you don’t have enough room.
- Drive cautiously in cases of extreme weather. Slow down and avoid sudden changes in speed, especially when the ground is slippery from rain or ice. Visibility is equally important, so keep your windows clean.
- Never drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. These substances cloud your mind and make it harder for you to focus on the road. Protect yourself as well as others by using a ride-share service or getting a designated driver.
It’s important to remember that your actions on the road affect everyone around you. Follow these tips to ensure a safer driving experience.
