WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING SSRI/ANTI-DEPRESSANTS CASES
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants are used to treat symptoms of depression and are the third most commonly prescribed class of medication in the U.S. In the late 1980s, the first SSRI, Prozac, entered market, followed by Paxil and Zoloft.
SSRI sales have risen significantly in recent years (400% increase since mid-1990s), particularly among women of child-bearing age. Research indicates that one out of every eight pregnant women now take an SSRI.
Sadly, SSRIs and another type of antidepressant, SNRIs, are linked to severe birth defects in children exposed to these drugs in the womb.

SSRI & SNRI Studies
Several studies have identified a significant risk for severe and life-threatening birth defects for children born to mothers who took an SSRI/SSRI during pregnancy.
In 2005, a Danish study found that infants exposed to SSRI antidepressants early in pregnancy were 60% more likely to develop a severe congenital heart defect compared to infants whose mothers did not take an SSRI.
The following year, a New England Journal of Medicine study discovered that women taking SSRIs during their third trimester were six times more likely to give birth to a child with a rare heart and lung condition known as persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN). The FDA responded by issuing a public health warning, requiring all SSRI medications to strengthen their labels to warn patients and doctors of this Risk.
In 2011, the FDA released a Safety Announcement acknowledging the risk of PPHN development in newborns exposed to SSRIs in the womb.
The most popular SSRIs include:
- Celexa and Cipramil
- Effexor
- Lexapro, Lexamil, Cipralex, and Seroplex
- Luvox
- Paxil and Aropax
- Pexeva
- Prozac
- Viibryd
- Wellbutrin
- Zoloft
- Zyban
In addition to PPHN, SSRIs have also been linked to limb-reduction defects and various malformations such as cleft lip, cleft palate, and club feet.

Congenital Defects and other SSRI Birth Defects
Many congenital defects have been reported by mothers who used an SSRI antidepressant during pregnancy. These range from limb malformations to heart defects.
Some of the most common SSRI birth defects are:
- Heart Defects: These include pulmonary artresia and stenosis, pulmonary stenosis, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, transposition of the great arteries (TGA), and tetrology of fallot (TOF).
- Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN): This is a lung condition in which the newborn may experience difficulty breathing, respiratory distress, organ damage, heart or kidney failure, and even death.
- Limb Malformations: This may include club foot and hand defects.
- Gastroschisis: This is when the intestines, stomach, or liver develop outside the body.
- Spina Bifida: This is a neural tube defect that results in paralysis or seizures.
- Craniosynostosis: This is a head and skull defect that can lead to developmental delays
- Omphalocele: This is a malformation of the abdominal wall that makes it difficult for the infant to eat and breathe correctly.
