WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING RISPERDAL CASES
Antipsychotic drugs like Risperdal and Invega are incredibly powerful medications that have been improperly prescribed to young boys. Risperdal’s manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, purposefully and illegally marketed Risperdal for off-label uses such as treating children struggling with behavioral issues like ADHD and autism. “Off-label” refers to when a doctor prescribes a medication for conditions not approved (and therefore not tested for safety or efficacy) by the FDA.
Risperdal (risperidone) is an atypical antipsychotic prescribed to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression in adults. Risperdal was not approved to treat children, but Johnson & Johnson marketed the drug to children anyway, despite repeated warnings from the FDA.
Johnson & Johnson was criminally charged for this unconscionable behavior, ultimately paying $2.2 billion to resolve criminal and civil charges. This did nothing to help the thousands of boys who were prescribed Risperdal only to later find out Johnson & Johnson intentionally falsified, destroyed, or hid records proving it could cause boys to develop breasts. That’s where we come in.

Risperdal Linked To Gynecomastia
Risperdal is the only atypical antipsychotic known to cause a condition called gynecomastia, which is swelling of female breast tissue in boys or men. Gynecomastia may require corrective surgery and causes severe psychological and emotional harm.
An estimated 10,000 gynecomastia lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson for the psychological trauma and medical expense of this condition. The first of these cases to go to trial resulted in a $2.5 million award to an autistic boy who developed size 46 DD breasts when he was ten years old.
On July 1, 2016, a jury awarded $70 million to a male teenager who suffered gynecomastia from Risperdal. The jury found Johnson & Johnson “intentionally falsified, destroyed, or concealed records” that Risperdal could cause female breast growth in boys. The boy in this case was just three years old when he was prescribed Risperdal for a psychiatric problem. He started growing breasts at age four.
One of the Largest Health Care Fraud Settlements in U.S. History
Johnson & Johnson pled guilty to marketing Risperdal to children while knowing and hiding the risks. The company peddled Risperdal to pediatricians, enacted “back to school” campaigns, and made Legos imprinted with Risperdal’s logo. All the while, Johnson & Johnson’s own studies found that at least 5.5% of boys would develop large breasts from the drug.
Johnson & Johnson’s Risperdal settlement is the largest healthcare fraud settlement in U.S. History:
- On November 4, 2013, Johnson & Johnson pled guilty to criminal and civil crimes over the marketing of Risperdal, Invega, and Natrecor, agreeing to pay $2.2 billion to the government.
This can never undo the immense harm done to children’s lives. To put this settlement in perspective, Risperdal sales reached $4.7 billion in 2007 alone. The drug has generated approximately $30 billion in global sales since its introduction in 1993. Moreover, the man in charge of marketing Risperdal, Alex Gorsky, was recently promoted to C.E.O. of Johnson & Johnson.
