The Dangers of Statins

Statins work by blocking the enzyme needed to make LDL cholesterol, the “bad” form of cholesterol linked to heart disease and other problems. These drugs are cheap and easy to take for most patients, which is why they are so widely used. Statins are taken throughout a patient’s life; however, the long-term effects are only now manifesting in patients’ health.

Type 2 Diabetes Linked to Lipitor

In 2008, a study called JUPITER analyzed 17,000 patients taking Lipitor. Researchers found that 3% of Lipitor patients developed type 2 diabetes during the study, compared to about 2.4% of patients taking a placebo. It appeared that Lipitor slightly accelerated diabetes development, which was later confirmed in other statins, such as Crestor.

This raised serious concerns with the statin drug class as a whole. Study after study found that statins like Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor posed a significant risk of type 2 diabetes. One study found patients taking Lipitor had an 18% higher risk of developing diabetes than those not on the drug.

Diabetes risk is highest for certain types of patients, such as women, the elderly, and those of Asian ethnicity. A 2012 study found that elderly women taking a statin had a 48% higher risk of developing diabetes compared to those who were not on a statin. In response to these reports, in 2012 the FDA released a Consumer Update warning patients that statins could cause blood sugar levels to rise and diabetes to develop. The federal agency also required Pfizer to update Lipitor’s labels to inform patients of this risk.

Lipitor Lawsuit Timeline

Plaintiffs involved in the Lipitor litigation are women who developed type 2 diabetes as a direct result of taking Lipitor. They claim Pfizer knew or should have known about the risk of elevated blood sugar levels before marketing the drug as safe and effective. They also allege Pfizer was negligent and refused to warn patients and doctors about Lipitor’s true health risks until it was ordered to do so by the FDA, more than 15 years after the drug was released.

Pfizer is now facing more than 2,000 lawsuits by patients who developed type 2 diabetes from Lipitor. The first of these lawsuits were filed in 2012 after the FDA released its Consumer Update and ordered label changes. Since then, a federal judicial panel decided to consolidate all Lipitor diabetes claims into a single court in South Carolina (MDL No.2502).
