An emergency restriction has been placed on a Miami plastic surgeon who promised his clients flat stomachs and curvaceous backsides. Dr. €œOsak€ Omulepu has botched several procedures, sending at least four patients to the emergency room. Our medical malpractice lawyers explain plastic surgery malpractice lawsuits and the most common forms of negligence.

“Very Aggressive” Liposuction

Dr. Omulepus license was restricted on February 16, 2016, in an order stating he posed an immediate, serious danger to the public. All patients injured under his care were undergoing liposuction and fat transfers to the buttocks, a procedure often referred to as a €œBrazilian butt lift.”

Butt implants and lifts are the fastest-growing types of plastic surgery in the country. In 2015, there were nearly 16 million cosmetic procedures done, and the numbers only continue to grow. The number of plastic surgery procedures rose 115% from 2000 to 2015.

During that same 15 year period, the number of Americans choosing to have a butt lift rose 252%.

Dr. Omulepu has been practicing in Florida since 2000, and is now working at plastic surgery office in Hialeah, Florida. The four botched surgeries were done at Spectrum-Aesthetics Center for Cosmetic Surgery and Vanity Cosmetic Surgery, in Miami. He is also licensed in New York and Massachusetts.

All four surgeries were done over a two-day period in May 2015. Omulepu promotes his practice on YouTube, where he states he is “very aggressive when it comes to liposuction. His videos feature graphic images and patient testimonials.

The four severely injured patients ranged in age from 29 to 35, and were hospitalized for extended periods of time. One patient spent three months in the hospital, and two patients were transferred to hospitals in Michigan to receive care.

Their injuries were caused by Omulepus negligence in dosing medication. He failed to use the correct doses of local anesthesia and other drugs while performing liposuction, which led to significant bleeding and other lasting complications.

Two patients had numerous tears in their internal organs from Omulepus €œaggressive€ liposuction technique. These repeated tears led to life-threatening blood infections, kidney failure, and respiratory failure. Unable to properly care for these patients, Omulepu discharged them to motels. One patient’s father found his daughter bleeding abundantly from a motel at 3 a.m.

The states Department of Health stated that Omulepu failed to provide the minimum standard of care for these patients. He is not board certified in plastic surgery.

Cosmetic Procedure Injury Lawsuits

Patients who choose to undergo cosmetic procedures are often reluctant to come forward about their injuries. They believe that, because they elected to have the surgery, they are at fault for any mistakes or negligence that occur. This is false, and dangerous, and allows doctors like Omulepu to keep practicing medicine.

Patients who have been seriously injured, disfigured, or killed during plastic surgeries have the right to file a malpractice claim just like any other surgery patient. Alarmingly, it is becoming increasingly common for doctors who are not certified in plastic surgery to perform these procedures. Many doctors advertise their services in cosmetic surgery as Omulepu did to make patients believe they are specialists in the field.

Other common plastic surgery malpractice claims include: using nurse anesthetists instead of anesthesiologists, performing dangerous procedures outside of hospitals, failing to take full medical histories, and ignoring patients wishes and informed consent.
