School Bus Drivers Drunk Behind the Wheel

Drunk driving leads to serious injuries and deaths nationwide. However, drunk driving accidents are entirely avoidable and can be prevented if drivers simply refuse to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. Our car accident lawyers are shocked at a recent series of drunk driving accidents involving school bus drivers responsible for the care and well-being of young children.

A bus driver in Long Island was recently arrested for a DUI after crashing a bus carrying seventh-grade students on a field trip. The 47-year-old driver was parking the bus when he hit a tree limb. This is the third recent DUI case involving school bus drivers in the area.

The driver was charged with violating Leandra’s Law, which stiffly penalizes drunk drivers carrying passengers 15 years of age or younger. He was also charged with being intoxicated while driving a school bus and endangering the welfare and safety of a child.

Another recent school bus driver DUI crash in the area involved a 66-year-old mini school bus driver. According to reports, the driver passed out while driving and crashed into a house. Five children were inside the bus at the time, between the ages of 5 and 8. Thankfully, none of the children were injured. The driver went to the hospital with serious injuries and was arraigned in his hospital bed. He was charged with violating Leandra’s Law, reckless endangerment, child endangerment, and driving while intoxicated.

The bus company claimed that the driver had a clean record until this incident. During his recruitment, he passed all of his DMV checks and alcohol/drug screenings. The driver is suspended pending the results of the investigation.

There likely would have been more casualties if there were people inside the house that the driver crashed into. Fortunately, there were only two dogs in the home, and they were not hurt. The property, however, suffered significant damage.

A third New York bus driver crashed an empty school bus on the Long Island Expressway. Although the bus driver had just dropped of the students, so none were on board, he had a bottle of open vodka with him on the bus. His blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.

Car crash cases are complex and require the expertise of experienced car accident law firms. The irresponsible behavior of drunk drivers causes serious emotional and physical injuries to victims nationwide. They need to be held accountable in order to prevent further harm.
