In its natural form, some talc does contain asbestos because they are usually located in close proximity to each other. Asbestos, when inhaled over time, is known to cause cancer in the lungs called mesothelioma.
Several studies show that women who have used talcum powder products on their genitals may have a slight increase in ovarian cancer risk over time. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or ovarian cancer and have used talc-containing products, contact an attorney at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm at (800) 794-0444 or online today to find out your next steps.
Research on the Link Between Talc and Cancer
In 1971, scientific researchers identified talc particles located inside of ovarian tumors. This discovery led some scientists to believe that there may be a causal link between ovarian cancer and the use of talcum powder on the genitals of women. Research continued, and in 1982, a study showed that there may be a slight increase in the risk of ovarian cancer if a woman used talc-containing products.
Scientists are still not providing definitive answers about the carcinogenic properties of talc. One 2008 study about perineal talc use and ovarian cancer stated that despite the similar chemical classification, talc doesn’t possess asbestos-like carcinogenic properties.
Another study in 2016 determined that there was a 33% increase in ovarian cancer risk by women who used talcum powders on their genitals. It appears as though research will continue for quite some time before clinical studies can call talc dangerous to use.
Lawsuits
The science may not be definitive, but that has not stopped thousands from filing lawsuits against the talcum powder manufacturer Johnson & Johnson for ovarian cancer and “tainted talc”. These lawsuits included not only women who had used talcum powder on their genitals and developed ovarian cancer, but also men and women who had inhaled talc over several years and developed mesothelioma.
Juries in many cases agreed, and Johnson & Johnson paid billions in these lawsuits. However, Johnson & Johnson’s independent test results show that their products do not contain asbestos at all.
