For almost half a century, scientists and researchers knew about the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. Talc, the main ingredient in talcum powder, is one of the softest known minerals on Earth. When mined, it is often found near the mineral asbestos, which is a known carcinogen. As neighbors in the Earth, the mineral talc may contain the mineral asbestos as well. For decades, researchers have considered that the asbestos-containing talc increases the risk of ovarian cancer and mesothelioma for those who were exposed to talc or used talcum powder products. If your doctor diagnosed you with ovarian cancer or mesothelioma, please contact the attorneys at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm at (800) 307-3113 to help you understand how you may be able to bring a lawsuit against a talcum powder manufacturer, such as Johnson & Johnson. We work on a contingency fee basis, so you do not pay unless we win.
Research on Talcum Powder Cancer
The first research study in 1971 proved a causal relationship between talc and ovarian cancer. The study examined tissue from patients with ovarian and cervical tumors. Talc particles were found deeply embedded within these tissues, raising the suspicion of a connection between talcum powder and ovarian cancer due to the asbestos particles noticeable within the talc.
The research continued, and in 1982, the relative risk was higher in women exposed to talc-containing products than those who were not. This study indicated some support for an association between talc and ovarian cancer. The association between talc use and ovarian cancer is explored in a 2016 research study which determined that estrogen plays a role in the inflammatory response to talc, thus increasing the risk of ovarian cancer. The most recent study, done in 2018, indicated that while the link between talc and ovarian cancer was weak, there is evidence to show a statistically significant association between the use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer. During all of this time, the largest talcum powder manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, knew that their products contained asbestos, by admission in their own internal documents.
While some studies have not reached the conclusion that talcum powder use increases a woman’s chance of ovarian cancer, most research concludes that there is a connection between ovarian cancer and talcum powder use. Regardless of the conflicting studies, juries have consistently awarded compensation to victims of talcum powder exposure.
If your doctor diagnosed you with ovarian cancer, and you have a history of any kind of talcum powder use, contact the attorneys at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm at (800) 307-3113 to help you examine if you may have a claim against a talcum powder manufacturer, such as Johnson & Johnson. Our goal for your injury case is to stop any further injuries and obtain the talcum powder settlement you deserve.
Mesothelioma Causes
Research has consistently shown that the inhalation of asbestos particles could cause an increased risk in the development of mesothelioma. Understanding that talc contained asbestos materials, researchers began attempting to determine if the inhalation of talc-containing particles would also cause mesothelioma.
Research findings dated in 2019 concluded Mesothelioma is associated with the use of cosmetic talc. This publication in the Journal of Occupational and Employment Medicine linked talcum powder exposure in a non-occupational environment to the development of mesothelioma. After sampling tissues from patients diagnosed with mesothelioma, researchers found talcum powder in all the sampling tissues. Talcum powder in these cases was the only exposure to asbestos that these patients had during their lifetime. The conclusion was solid that exposure to asbestos-contaminated talcum powders raised the risk of mesothelioma.
