Side Effects of the NuvaRing
In 1995, the FDA reported that, "new studies indicate about a two-fold increase in the risk of venous blood clots associated with products containing desogestrel." NuvaRing contains is the active metabolite of desogestrel.
NuvaRing is linked to the following problems:
- Heart Attack
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): DVT occurs when blood clots form in deep veins, like in the leg and pelvis. The most serious complication with DVT is when the clot travels to the lungs, resulting in pulmonary embolism.
- Pulmonary Embolism (PE): PE occurs when a main artery of the lung or one of the lung’s branches is blocked by a blood clot. Symptoms of PE may include problems breathing, chest pain, and palpitations. In severe cases of PE, a patient may collapse, suffer from extremely low blood pressure, or die prematurely.
NuvaRing Lawsuits & Settlements
In 2014, NuvaRing’s manufacturer, Merck, agreed to pay $100 million to settle multi-district litigation (MDL) in Eastern District of Missouri, which had more than 3,800 claimants. Currently, over 200 claims are consolidated in New Jersey state court.
