Parents of young girls everywhere are disappointed after learning that their daughters’ favorite stores are under investigation for selling asbestos-containing makeup. Below is a list of popular stores that may have sold makeup contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen.
JUSTICE
A recent third-party investigation revealed that Justice’s “Just Shine Shimmer Powder” tested positive for four heavy metals, including lead and asbestos-contaminated talc.
Environmental researchers say that while talc is a common ingredient in makeup powders, talc contaminated with asbestos is unacceptable.
If the allegations are true, girls who’ve used this makeup may suffer the consequences of asbestos exposure 30-40 years from now. There is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Any asbestos fibers the girls had breathed in or swallowed could get trapped in their lungs and cause scarring and inflammation, which could lead to diseases like lung cancer or mesothelioma later on.
CLAIRE’S
Accessory store Claire’s is under fire for a similar offense. Recent claims say that much of the popular store’s glittery makeup contains asbestos.
The Scientific Analytical Institute (SAI) collected and tested makeup from 17 Claire’s stores in 9 states. The resulting report concluded that all of the samples tested positive for asbestos. The company made no comment about this finding, but told employees to pull the makeup in question off the shelves during Christmas weekend, as a precaution.

RISKS OF ASBESTOS EXPOSURE
Asbestos used to be known as a “miracle mineral” due to its durable and fireproof fibers, but today, we know it has devastating effects.
Breathing in or ingesting asbestos fibers can cause the fibers to get stuck in the lining of the throat, lungs, and heart, among other areas of the body. The human body doesn’t know how to get rid of them, so the asbestos is stuck in the body for a long time, causing diseases decades later. Anyone can develop diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma after just one encounter.
Asbestos used to be associated only with older individuals who were exposed to asbestos on the job, at places like shipyards and construction sites. The truth is, asbestos doesn’t discriminate—it can harm anyone who comes into contact with it.
WHAT CAN I DO IF I’VE ALREADY PURCHASED THIS MAKEUP?
Unlike with car recalls, Justice and Claire’s aren’t required to contact buyers of the dangerous makeup.
If you’ve recently purchased makeup products from these stores, you can still return them for a full refund. While internal investigations of both companies showed no signs of asbestos in their products, they agreed to honor returns for concerned customers.

Asbestos attorneys at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm urge parents to monitor the products their children are using.
Checking the ingredients list on makeup products is a great place to start. Unfortunately, the ingredients list won’t alert parents of asbestos-contaminated talc—testing the makeup in a lab is the only way to find that out—but it will help parents decide if they want to steer clear of it.
