Contaminated food lawyers at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm confirm a recent recall by Reser’s Fine Foods over concerns about Listeria contamination. The company is recalling nearly 23,000 pounds of its beef, chicken, and ham products manufactured in Topeka, Kansas.
Among the products recalled include Reser’s products sold under Cobble Street Market, Cross Valley Farms, Chef Solutions, and Stonemill Kitchens labels. A full list of affected foods can be found here. The products were distributed to retailers in 27 states and Canada, including Illinois, Florida, New York, and Texas. The FDA believes Listeria contaminated the food through contact surfaces. Fortunately, no reports of serious injury have yet been reported.
Consumers with any questions regarding the recall can contact Reser’s at 1.888.257.7913, or may ask questions to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) at AskKaren.gov. The FSIS recommends that people who think they may be at risk for Listeriosis should practice the following:
- Washing hands, cutting boards, dishes and utensils before and after handling raw meat.
- Keeping raw meat away from other foods that will not be cooked (separate cutting boards).
- Not eating cold hot dogs and deli meats. Cook until steaming.
- Not eating refrigerated pate, meat spreads, or smoked seafood. Canned foods are okay.
- Not eating raw milk or foods that have unpasteurized milk in them.
- Not eating salads (chicken, egg, ham, tuna, seafood) that are made in-store.
- Not eating soft cheeses (Brie, Feta, Panela, etc) unless labeled as made with pasteurized milk.
- Using precooked or ready-to-eat food as soon as possible.
- Keeping your refrigerator at 40 degrees Farenhiet or lower and freezer a 0 degrees or lower.

Listeria is able to grow in the refrigerator, and can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections in the elderly, young children, or frail individuals with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience only minor symptoms, such as high fevers, severe headache, nausea, and abdominal pain. It is important to note that Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
In related news, Sunny Pine Farms also recently announced a recall of its Organic Chevre, Organic Parsley Chive Chevre, and Organic Honey Lavender Chevre due to inadequate pasteurization. As implied above, pasteurization heats milk to effectively destroy illness-causing bacteria, such as Listeria and Salmonella.
