The decision to place a family member in a nursing home is difficult and often heart wrenching. Once this decision is made, trust is placed in the nursing home to administer the best care. One of our clients trusted a nursing home to attend and monitor her mother, Veronica,* but discovered neglect instead. Veronica was admitted to the nursing home for extended rehabilitation following a surgical repair. While at the nursing home, she developed pressure sores, also known as bed sores, that progressed to the worst and final stage. Bed sores occur when the patient is in one position for too long and pressure reduces the blood supply to the skin. In the final stages, bed sores can progress down to the muscle and the bone. Sadly, Veronica’s sores took four years to heal. Veronica’s daughter contacted our firm to investigate the nursing home’s negligence. Our firm, along with local counsel, found that the nursing home and staff failed to appropriately assess, prevent, and treat the pressure sores that developed on Veronica’s body while she was a resident at the home. After filing a lawsuit, further research and inquiry were done. At this point, the nursing home employees admitted that due to under-staffing, they could not turn and reposition Veronica in a timely manner. In fighting to protect Veronica’s rights, our firm resolved the case and obtained a settlement of $2.7 million. State laws protect nursing home patients, and our firm continues to pursue negligent nursing homes and doctors. Unfortunately, in addition to bed sores, nursing homes commonly allow slip-and-fall accidents and irregular or improper medication to occur. To ensure that your loved one is properly cared for in a nursing home, call our offices so we may investigate your claim.
