Mirena attorneys at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm highlight a recent story published by the ABC affiliate in Cleveland uncovering concerns about the Mirena IUD and complaints made by women to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Pintas & Mullins Law Firm emphasizes that these complaints are far from uncommon, as thousands of women continue to bring lawsuits against the Mirena manufacturer.
Since 2000, when the device was first introduced, the FDA has logged more than 70,000 reports of adverse health effects from the popular IUD. Since 2008 alone, nearly 5,000 of those complaints are of the device migrating from the implantation site, breaking through thin organ walls, and entering into the uterus or other internal organs.
There are currently more than 2 million women using the Mirena IUD, one of whom, Sara, a mother of three, was subjected to so much pain from the device she was taken to the emergency room. Doctors performed X-rays and found the IUD had perforated through her uterine wall and was suspended in her abdomen, and
an emergency
surgery was performed to remove
the it
.
Sara contends that neither her physician nor the manufacturers of
MIrena
(via the IUD’s label) ever told her about the possibility of spontaneous perforation. To this day, she experiences pain on the left side of her abdomen, a result of nerve damage from her IUD perforation. Her doctor told her the pain will never go away due to the extent of
damage
.
From perforation to embedment, infertility
and
miscarriages, the injuries suffered from Mirena complications can be horrific. One woman’s Mirena migrated from the implant site and lacerated her liver. Another was forced to have an appendectomy, hysterectomy, and have a significant amount of stomach tissue removed after her Mirena embedded in her uterus.
One particularly gruesome case currently being pursued in court involved a woman whose IUD migrated into her rib cage. Doctors had to perform a sternotomy to remove it, which is the same type of surgery performed during open heart surgery, where the patient’s sternum
is is
broken open.

The Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons recently published a study detailing a few specific cases of Mirena migration requiring surgical removal. The study’s author affirmed that uterine perforation is one of the most recognized side effects of Mirena, and that expulsion can occur in about every eight per 1000 insertions. In many cases, perforation occurs several months or several years after initial insertion. The author stated that it is difficult to be certain of the exact cause of IUD migration.
One of the cases detailed in the study involved a
19 year old
woman who experienced severe, excruciating pelvic pain due to uterine IUD perforation. It is worth noting that she had the Mirena inserted almost immediately after terminating a pregnancy, and it was unclear whether the management of this case was in the patient’s best interest.
At least 100 Mirena lawsuits were recently consolidated in New Jersey state court due to their common claims. Consolidation allows for more efficient and effective pretrial proceedings. There are also dozens of Mirena lawsuits currently pending in federal court against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, the IUD’s manufacturer, alleging the same injuries and devastating side effects mentioned above.
