One of the scariest forms of abuse that can happen to an elder in a nursing home is sexual abuse. It can happen from both other residents and staff and can go undetected for some time if the victim is unable to respond or realize what happened.
KY3.com reported on a Crane, MO case where a man was sentenced for seven years in prison for a guilty plea of first-degree sexual abuse. He was accused of raping two mentally handicapped women at a nursing home in that city.
In June 2018, investigators went to the man’s home to arrest him after a victim reported the crime. During questioning, the man admitted to having intercourse with two different women at the home a minimum of five times, as well as other sexual acts. The women were unable to consent due to their mental decline. Police say the incidents happened in a 2.5 month period.
In addition to the sentence, he will also need to undergo a sex offender assessment unit program. If he completes the program, he could be released on probation after serving 120 days.
If you believe your loved one has been sexually abused by a worker or a resident, do not hesitate to report the incident to the home and to the police.
