Unfortunately, we now know that asbestos causes cancer and other serious diseases. Among the most severe include lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, and head and neck cancers.
Given the extremely hazardous nature of asbestos, government agencies now set asbestos exposure limits (for work in all industries). Despite these standards, the government states that there is no level of safe asbestos exposure – any amount is considered a significant risk.
WHO IS AT RISK?
All levels of asbestos exposure are dangerous, but some are more likely to suffer its deadly effects, particularly if they are exposed to it on a regular basis. Workers in the shipbuilding trades, asbestos mining and milling, insulation work, firefighters, and automobile industry are most at risk.
SIGNS OF EXPOSURE
Severity and frequency of symptoms differ for each person depending on a variety of factors, but some of the most common signs of asbestos-related illness include:
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty swallowing
- High blood pressure
- Hypertension
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
Essentially, the lungs begin to scar over time, affecting their ability work properly.
