- Mesothelioma- Cancer of the abdominal cavity
Getting the news about a negative health diagnosis could be devastating to veterans and their loved ones. It is an overwhelming process that can be tough to manage.
RISK OF SUICIDE FOR LUNG CANCER PATIENTS
A recent article shows that the risk of suicide is four times more likely in lung cancer patients—veterans included. Dr. Jeffrey Port of Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York says the suicide risk could be so high because:
- Most people may feel very little hope after a cancer diagnosis
- People may feel guilty for smoking, even though lung cancer is not always caused by it
- Lung cancer patients may have other health issues such as heart disease
- Lung cancer does not have many survivors, so there are very few support groups
Suicide is 100% preventable. Families and friends of veterans suffering from lung cancer should look out for warning signs that signal depression or anxiety. Prevention begins with realizing that there is a problem and fixing it.
