The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety alert, warning consumers not to use three cosmetics sold by Claire’s stores which tested positive for asbestos.
The alert warns that Claire’s eye shadows, contour palette, and compact powder contain talcum powder, commonly called talc. Talc is often linked to and contaminated by asbestos, a known cancer-causing substance.
The FDA alert comes on the heels of federal allegations that Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) talcum powder products have been contaminated with asbestos. To date, nearly 12,000 lawsuits have been filed by our clients and others against J&J, primarily by women who are suffering from ovarian cancer.
FDA to Investigate Cosmetics Manufacturers
In the wake of the situation with Claire’s cosmetics, the FDA intends to investigate cosmetic manufacturers’ sources for talc and the steps being taken to test the raw materials or finished products. The feds will also look into how many cosmetic products contain talc, and whether the manufacturers of those products have received any reports of adverse reactions or illnesses associated with them.
While Claire’s insists its products are safe, the company reports that it has removed the three products in question from its stores, as well as any remaining talc-based cosmetic products. The FDA, however, said that Claire’s has refused its request to recall the products that tested positive for asbestos. Because the FDA does not have the authority to force a recall, it issued the safety alert.
Today, American cosmetic manufacturers are not legally required to test their products for safety. The FDA hopes to work with Congress to update the antiquated regulations for cosmetics under which the agency has been operating more for than 80 years.
