Federal investigators are currently reviewing the safety of Yaz birth control pills. Two recent British Medical Journal Reports found that women taking Yaz are 2 or 3 times more likely to develop serious blood clots. Yaz attorneys at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm are currently representing many clients harmed by birth control pill Yaz. Our attorneys know that that all birth control pills can cause side effects like headaches, dizziness, and nausea. The latest studies confirm that Yaz users are at even greater risk for venous thromboembolism, a potentially deadly blood clots that develop in the deep veins of the legs and travel to the lungs.
In addition to Bayer’s Yaz, other birth control pills containing the drospirenone hormone pose similar blood clot risks. These include Yazmin, Beyaz, Safyral, and generics Ocella, Syeda, and Zarah. Women taking these pills are advised to look for symptoms of blood clots, such as sudden leg pain, severe chest pain, or shortness of breath. Pill users over 35 and women who smoke are most likely to develop deadly blood clots.
European regulators are considering revised label information for drospirenone-containing birth control pills, warning users of the risk. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is being equally cautious, issuing a special drug safety warningto all drospirenone-containing birth control users. The agency is conducting a large-scale study involving 800,000 women to further examine the risks. Results are expected later this summer.

Bayer is already facing more than 7,000 lawsuits from Yaz users who say the birth control pill manufacturer misrepresented the dangers of Yaz and failed to warn of serious side effects such as stroke and cardiac arrest. Bayer aggressively marketed its oral contraceptive pills to young women, not only to prevent pregnancy, but to treat pre-menstrual symptoms and acne.
One Yaz wrongful death lawsuit was filed in 2010 by the mother of an 18-year-old college student who died after taking Yaz for about a year. The Elon University student collapsed on her way to class and doctors determined that blood clots in her lungs ultimately caused her death. The wrongful death lawsuit alleges that the makers of Yaz falsely misrepresented their defective and dangerous product. Bayer knew that Yaz birth control pills caused potentially fatal blood clots and slowed heart rhythms, but neglected to warn innocent users. Between 2004 and 2008, Yaz, Yazmin, and their generic substitutes caused at least 50 deaths nationwide.

Bayer agreed to work with the FDA and government officials in several states, spending $20 million on an advertising campaign to warn users about the real risks of Yaz birth control pills. But thousands of lawsuits are still pending against the birth control manufacturer, and even more are expected now that more studies confirmed the serious risk of Yaz-related blood clots.

Yaz attorneys continue to help users of Yaz, Yazmin and similar birth control pills who experience serious side effects such as blood clots or stroke. Women over 35 and women who have a family history of blood clots are at greatest risk for permanent injuries or death. However, all Yaz users should watch out for symptoms of health problems associated with the birth control pills. Yaz lawsuits and Yasmin lawsuits have been filed on behalf of women across the country who suffered heart attacks, strokes, and other serious birth control-related injuries.
