Our very own Chicago personal injury attorney, Bill Pintas, experienced the hotter side of Las Vegas (quite literally) while staying at the Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas. Attorney Pintas was actually looking to cool down at the hotel pool when he experienced this heated phenomenon. As he laid back in a chair he was suddenly confronted with uncomfortable temperatures that singed his hair and melted the plastic bag he carried his newspaper in! When he notified hotel staff, they laughed and acknowledged that the so called “death ray” was a common event.
THE CAUSE OF THE LAS VEGAS DEATH RAY
Upon further investigation, it became apparent that the hotel was well aware of the “death ray”, although they preferred to call it a “hot spot” or “glare” – less frightening terms to visitors and tourists. The Vdara tower is crescent-shaped. At certain points in the day, the reflection of the sun beams down onto the pool deck in about a 10 by 15 foot space and can heat temperatures up by about 20 degrees – hot enough to melt plastic cups and plastic shopping bags!

The hotel has taken some steps to correct the problem, such as covering windows with a film; however, this has not reduced the impact significantly and hotel guests still run the risk of experiencing a hotter-than-usual stay in Las Vegas.
