Airline Toxic Fumes
In aircrafts, half of the air one breathes is recycled and the rest comes from deep within the engines. The air from the engines is referred to as "bleed air". Upon entering the cabin, "bleed air" mixes with re-circulated air that has passed through filters designed to remove toxins but not fumes and vapors from the engine. Thus if engine oil or hydraulic fuel leaks, toxic chemicals can contaminate air supply.
Recent research has shown that the air pumped into plane cabins and cockpits may be linked to development of serious health problems for pilots, crew, and passengers. Scientists have found that toxic fumes on planes are linked to serious brain damage primarily in pilots, known as aerotoxic syndrome. These fumes are cited as a problem primarily on Boeing 757, British Aerospace 146, Airbus A319, and Embraer 145 aircrafts.
The following symptoms are associated with aerotoxic syndrome:
- Cognitive problems such as memory loss
- Nausea
- Breathing difficulties
- Neurological illness
- Brain damage
The problem of contaminated air cabin air has been estimated to affect up to 200,000 passengers per year. The aviation industry has been aware of the potential ill health effects from air cabin air, but has done little to address this serious condition.
