Nuva Ring is a contraceptive vaginal ring that is available by prescription. Approximately 1.5 million women worldwide currently use Nuva Ring. Nuva Ring contains the hormone etonogestrel, which has been shown to lead to an increased risk of blood clots in comparison to other contraceptives.

Nuva Ring Side Effects

The contraceptive Nuva Ring has been linked to serious problems as a result of blood clots such as:

• Stroke
• Heart Attack
• Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): DVT occurs when blood clots form in the body's deep veins. It commonly affects veins in the leg and pelvis. The most serious complication with DVT is that the clot may travel to the lungs, resulting in pulmonary embolism.
• Pulmonary Embolism (PE): PE occurs when a main artery of the lung or one of its branches is blocked with a blood clot. Symptoms of PE may include problems breathing, chest pain, and palpitations. In severe cases of PE, a patient may collapse, suffer from extremely low blood pressure, or even pass away.

In November 1995, the FDA acknowledged that Nuva Ring may lead to an increased risk of blood clots. The FDA reported, "new studies indicate about a two-fold increase in the risk of venous blood clots associated with products containing desogestrel". Etonogestrel, which Nuva Ring contains, is the active metabolite of desogestrel.

To date, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Merck, the manufacturer of Nuva Ring, for the failure to adequately disclose the health risks of the device.
